Some time ago, I had SolarWinds product installed as a monitoring solution.

We had the dashboard on the wall; if it turned red, we had a server down.

The product was my idea, but I was not part of the installation process, so I had no idea how to use the product. It was just to be used as a dashboard.

We had an intermittent network issue where a port would die intermittently. After we had checked the PC, the port would be located as the root cause. This was time-consuming to troubleshoot.

After reviewing the error logs on the switch and researching the Syslog facility, I discovered that I could use Solarwinds as a Syslog server for the Cisco switch.

Using the Solarwinds map, I documented the Syslog configuration and had it implemented by our network support provider.

The result was an amber alert on the board that enabled me to fix the intermittent dead port without getting out of my chair.

The Map allowed me to see hidden features and create a solution for free. I consider this one of my most significant technical achievements.
